Hail turned Paphos into a “white” city

Heavy rain and powerful hail hit the Paphos district on Sunday afternoon, causing streets and coastal areas in some places to literally turn white — as if after snowfall. Due to the sudden deterioration of weather conditions, the Paphos fire service had to urgently reinforce its shifts: off-duty personnel were called in and additional teams were formed to respond to flooding.
According to rescuers, around 15 emergency calls were received within a few hours. Most of the work involved pumping water out of flooded basements and clearing storm drains to restore safe traffic on the roads.
The heaviest hail fell in the Geroskipou area, along the western coast of Paphos and in the airport zone. The bad weather also caused power outages in some areas.
Meteorologists warn that the influence of a low-pressure system persists: local rains are expected, and frost is possible in the mountains at night.
