Macron's historic visit: France and Cyprus strengthen strategic partnership
The first official visit by French President Emmanuel Macron to the Republic of Cyprus since its founding in 1960 marked a significant milestone in bilateral relations. In Nicosia, it was described as a historic step reflecting the deepening cooperation between the two countries.
A key outcome of the talks with President Nikos Christodoulides was the agreement on the framework for a strategic partnership. Particular importance is attached to the SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement), expected to be signed in June. The document will allow French military personnel to be stationed on the island, significantly enhancing security cooperation.
Macron emphasized that relations between the countries are strategic and based on equality. He highlighted cooperation in defense, energy, and port infrastructure. The French President also reaffirmed Paris's readiness to support Cyprus in the face of threats, stating that an attack on Cyprus is perceived as an attack on Europe as a whole.
This position has already seen practical confirmation: France provided support to Cyprus following the drone attack on the Akrotiri base. Christodoulides, in turn, noted that "true friends are known in difficult moments," thanking the French side for their concrete actions.
In addition to security issues, the parties discussed the development of cooperation in education, culture, and sports. New agreements for the 2026–2030 period were signed, consolidating the further expansion of the partnership.
Experts note that France and Cyprus traditionally maintain close ties based on the convergence of strategic interests. The current visit confirmed the course toward their deepening and gave additional impetus to long-term cooperation.
