Christodoulides: Buffer zone and resumption of talks are key topics of meeting with Erhürman

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides stated that at the upcoming meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, he will raise issues related to the situation in the buffer zone, as well as other current challenges affecting the political process. According to him, the goal of the talks is a "meaningful bilateral discussion" aimed at finding progress on the Cyprus settlement.
Christodoulides noted that the discussions will also touch upon confidence-building measures, where some positive developments are already observed, but moving toward the essence of the negotiations remains key. He reported that active work is underway under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General and expressed expectation for the convening of an expanded conference, which could be a step toward resuming the negotiation process.
Separately, the President emphasized that the situation in the buffer zone will be among the priority topics of the meeting. He added that there are other negative factors and actions that create tension and could hinder efforts to resume dialogue.
Christodoulides also touched upon the upcoming parliamentary elections, stating that the state apparatus is fully prepared for them. According to him, the elections will be organized and trouble-free, despite the record number of candidates.
