President Nikos Christodoulides stated on Sunday that he has already held talks with regional and European leaders regarding Cyprus's potential humanitarian role amidst the escalation.

According to him, the authorities of Japan and China have approached Cyprus with requests for assistance in evacuating their citizens from the tension zone.

The President noted that due to flight cancellations, countries in the region are requesting permission to station commercial aircraft at Cypriot airports.

"The Republic of Cyprus responds to this humanitarian role with actions, not words. This role is recognized internationally," Christodoulides emphasized.

The head of state also reported that a meeting led by the Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs took place on Sunday morning to determine the exact number of Cypriot citizens in the affected countries.

He recalled that on Saturday, the government urged citizens in the region to contact Cyprus's diplomatic missions. Christodoulides also mentioned phone conversations with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos will participate in an EU ministerial teleconference later today.
