Cyprus police introduce system to track criminals through international databases and social networks
The Cyprus Police are implementing new technology to increase the efficiency of crime prevention and the search for suspects. Starting September 1, police officers will be equipped with tablets running the CY Patrol Check application, which will allow for quick verification of individuals and objects in international databases.
The program is integrated with the Schengen Information System (SIS), which contains data on internationally wanted persons, as well as stolen vehicles and other objects. Thus, during street checks or police operations, officers will be able to promptly identify criminals hiding from justice and trace wanted property.
Special attention is also given to the application’s role in monitoring the digital space. According to reports, the platform will provide the police with access to information about wanted persons, including those who may be active on social networks. This is expected to help identify criminals who attempt to hide behind anonymous accounts or maintain contacts online.
The new tool is intended to strengthen control on the island and enhance security. Cypriot authorities expect that the introduction of such technology will reduce police response time, facilitate patrol work, and promote closer cooperation with international organizations, including Interpol.
The initiative is part of the overall digitalization of Cyprus’ law enforcement system and aligns with modern European standards for combating crime and cyber threats. The use of CY Patrol Check is expected to become an important step toward more effective control in both real and virtual space.
