Cypriot Websites Targeted by Cyberattacks in Recent Days
In recent days, several websites in Cyprus have been the target of cyberattacks, announced Communications Commissioner Georgios Michaelides, who oversees the Digital Security Authority.
According to him, these are DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) attacks—where a website is overwhelmed by an artificially created high volume of requests and becomes temporarily unavailable to users.
Michaelides noted that such attacks are considered the most common and least dangerous. During an attack, the site may fail to open or run very slowly, but this does not mean the system has been hacked.
He also emphasized that the attacks occur periodically and usually do not last long—sometimes only a few hours a day. Since various websites are affected, not just government ones, it is not yet possible to speak of a targeted attack on state structures.
According to the Commissioner, the reasons for such attacks can vary—from regional events to random hacker activity.
Specialists from the Digital Security Authority monitor the situation around the clock and inform critical infrastructures. Website owners are recommended to use specialized protection services in advance to help distribute the load and keep the site operational even during attacks.
