The Cyprus National Guard conducted a towing operation involving the historical replica of the vessel “Kyrenia II,” highlighting the connection between the modern fleet and the island's maritime history. The patrol boat “Kyrenia” also participated in the event, escorting the vessel on a symbolic voyage.

As noted in the official statement, the initiative is aimed at promoting the maritime heritage of Cyprus and is timed to coincide with events within the framework of the country's presidency of the Council of the EU.

“Kyrenia II” is a full-scale reconstruction of an ancient Greek merchant ship from the 4th century BC. The original ship, which sank around 288 BC off the coast of Cyprus, is considered one of the best-preserved ancient shipwrecks ever discovered.

The wreckage was found in 1965, and its recovery took more than three years and required the participation of dozens of archaeologists and specialists. Later, the ship was restored and exhibited in Kyrenia Castle, where it is kept to this day.

The “Kyrenia II” replica is actively used in scientific and cultural projects, including experimental archaeology, and has participated in international events, including a voyage to Greece during the 2004 Olympic Games.

The naval forces emphasized that such operations have not only symbolic significance but also contribute to strengthening public interest in the history of navigation and the cultural heritage of Cyprus.

For Cyprus, such initiatives have a double effect: they strengthen the national identity associated with maritime tradition and simultaneously enhance the country's cultural diplomacy, demonstrating its historical continuity and role as a maritime power in the region.
