Leaders of Cyprus’s Two Communities to Meet in the Buffer Zone Today
The President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ersin Tatar, and the leader of the Greek Cypriot administration, Nikos Christodoulides, will meet today at the residence of Colin Stewart, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus and head of the UNFICYP mission. The meeting will take place in the buffer zone.

Scheduled for 10:30 AM, the meeting will focus on discussions about opening new crossing points between the two sides. Expectations are high that an agreement to open the Haspolat crossing could be finalized and signed today.
Previously, President Tatar proposed establishing a second vehicle crossing point in Nicosia at Haspolat, which would help reduce traffic congestion at the existing Metehan crossing. The opening of this new crossing point aims to ease vehicle movement and boost trade volume between the two communities under the Green Line Regulation.
During a recent joint press conference with Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, Tatar reiterated his appeal to the Greek Cypriot leader to quickly propose additional crossing points that could serve as alternatives to Haspolat.
