In early September 2025, an unexpected and provocative image appeared on the facade of the central court building in the United Kingdom, a place long associated with justice, signed by the anonymous street artist known as Banksy. The mural, which appeared on September 7, became a moment of public resonance and sparked new discussions about the influence of money and power on the judicial system.

In the image, the artist depicted a hooded figure spraying paint, creating the symbol of the scales of justice. On one scale is a bag of money, while on the other is a miniature figure of the “ordinary citizen,” in a desperately precarious position. This visual contrast was perceived as a vivid and harsh critique of how financial resources can outweigh and distort the balance of justice.

The graffiti is executed in Banksy’s characteristic black-and-white style — a contour image sharply contrasting with the gray stone of the court facade. This combination enhances the sense of clash between official, authoritative symbolism and subversive visual form, making the work particularly expressive.

Briefly about who Banksy is

Banksy is the pseudonym of a famous English street artist, political activist, and filmmaker whose true identity remains unknown. His work first appeared in the 1990s on the streets of Bristol and London. His creations, mostly in stencil technique, combine sharp social and political satire with an ironic, sometimes darkly humorous message.

He creates graffiti in public spaces — walls, bridges, and other surfaces, usually without official permission. Despite this, his works have been resold many times, and some were even physically removed along with parts of the wall. For official sales of his works, Banksy uses his own agency called Pest Control.

In addition to graffiti, he directed and appeared in the documentary film “Exit Through the Gift Shop” (2010), nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary. Banksy also receives recognition in the form of awards, including being named “Person of the Year” by the Webby Awards in 2014.
