Cyprus mixed-marriage children's citizenship case referred to ECHR
The case regarding the granting of Republic of Cyprus citizenship to a child from a mixed marriage has moved to the next stage of consideration at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
The case concerns Ente Hançer Akkor, which was previously heard and rejected by the courts of the Republic of Cyprus.
Burak Maviş, General Secretary of the Turkish Cypriot Teachers' Union (KTÖS), announced that the parties have been notified of the case's progression to the next procedural stage at the ECHR. According to him, this process is being treated as a pilot case, as it could impact other citizenship applications for children of mixed marriages between Turkish Cypriots and third-country nationals, including those from Turkey.
Maviş noted that the criteria used by Cypriot authorities to deny citizenship in such cases may raise questions about potential discrimination against citizens.
The union also urged families in similar situations to file their own applications.
