Cyprus Updates Fines for Running Red Lights
New rules for traffic light violation fines have come into effect in Cyprus. The decision was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers and published in the Official Gazette.
The new system introduces tiered fines depending on how far a vehicle travels past the stop line or pedestrian crossing.
According to the updated regulations:
- crossing the stop line at a traffic light — €25 fine;
- entering a pedestrian crossing on a red light — €85 fine and 3 penalty points;
- driving past the pedestrian crossing or entering the intersection on a red light — €300 fine and 3 penalty points.
The same sanctions apply at intersections without pedestrian crossings if a driver crosses the stop line and enters the intersection zone on a red signal.
The police noted that the new rules are not retroactive and aim to ensure clearer enforcement of fines recorded by traffic control cameras.
