Cyprus launches campaign to renew vehicle road tax permits for 2026
On 7 January 2026, Cyprus officially launched the campaign to renew vehicle road tax permits, the Department of Road Transport reports. The final deadline for renewal is Wednesday, 11 March 2026, until 24:00.
Permits can be renewed for three, six, nine, or twelve months. After the deadline, an additional charge of €10 plus 10% of the applicable annual permit fee for the current year will be imposed.
To renew, a valid vehicle roadworthiness certificate and active insurance are required. The renewal process is considered complete only when the confirmation “Print road tax permit” appears on the screen, indicating the month and year of expiry and the registration number. If the procedure is interrupted, it must be repeated.
The Department of Road Transport announced the modernization of its electronic payment system with an additional level of control over permit issuance based on completed payments and urged citizens to renew permits early to avoid system overload in the final days.
Citizens who renewed their permit in 2025 but do not intend to renew it in 2026 must submit a declaration of vehicle immobilization to the Department via its website; otherwise, the payment obligation remains. Vehicles that were not renewed in 2025 and were not declared immobilized will be removed from the Department’s register if outstanding fees are not paid and renewal for 2026 is not completed by 11.03.2026.
In the event of vehicle destruction, the owner must submit an application for cancellation of registration (form 98A) to the Department, along with a “Certificate of Destruction” issued by a licensed end-of-life vehicle treatment facility, in order to be exempt from fee obligations from the date of destruction.
Permit renewal is available online throughout the year. Exceptions include embassy vehicles, private buses of large families, quarry vehicles, classic cars with special permits (paying €25), United Nations vehicles, and vehicles with exemption code 04 — their owners must apply to district offices of the Department to pay the fees. Persons experiencing difficulties using the internet may visit district offices of the Department, Citizen Service Centres, and KEPO centres to complete the renewal. The Department notes that no notifications will be sent to vehicle owners and urges them to keep their contact details up to date in the register to receive important information.
