Woman detained at Ledra checkpoint with smuggled cigarettes and tobacco
The customs services of the Republic of Cyprus reported the detention of a woman at the Ledra Street checkpoint for attempting to smuggle undeclared tobacco products from the TRNC.
According to the department, the incident occurred on Sunday during routine checks regarding compliance with Green Line crossing regulations. Customs officers stopped a woman who had previously been involved in cases related to the illegal import of tobacco products.
During the inspection of her personal belongings and a subsequent personal search, cigarettes and tobacco were found without the mandatory health warnings and markings in Greek and Turkish, indicating the illegal origin of the goods.
Customs officers seized five cartons of cigarettes — a total of 1,000 cigarettes, as well as 2 kilograms and 750 grams of rolling tobacco. In addition, the vehicle used to transport the products was confiscated.
The woman was detained at the scene but was later released following an out-of-court settlement of the case. The administrative fine amounted to 1,270 euros.
The Customs Department of the Republic of Cyprus reminded that the transportation of undeclared tobacco products across the green line remains a violation of the law and is under the constant control of the authorities.
