More than 560,000 voters will be eligible to vote in the parliamentary elections in May
In the parliamentary elections to be held in Cyprus on May 24, 561,252 registered voters will be eligible to participate. These figures were provided by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Elikkos Elia, citing statistics as of January 2.
The final deadline for voter registration is set for April 2. Ahead of this date, the Ministry of Interior plans to send letters to citizens who will turn 18 before election day, urging them to register. Two information campaigns will also be launched jointly with the Press and Information Office.
Since the beginning of January, 775 people have already applied to be added to the electoral rolls, and authorities expect a significant increase in registrations in the coming months.
Citizens under the age of 25 can register online via the portal elections.gov.cy. Those over 25 can submit applications at district administrations, citizen service centers, or post offices. Paper application forms are also available there.
A total of 56 parliamentary seats will be contested in the elections:
- 19 — from the Nicosia district
- 12 — from Limassol
- 11 — from Famagusta
- 6 — from Larnaca
- 5 — from Paphos
- 3 — from Kyrenia
The Paphos district received an additional seat due to population growth — it was reallocated from Nicosia.
Originally, the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus provided for a parliament of 50 members, including 15 representatives of the Turkish Cypriot community. However, after the events of 1963, Turkish Cypriot deputies ceased participating in parliamentary work. In 1985, the number of seats was increased to 56 for Greek Cypriot deputies, while 24 seats reserved for Turkish Cypriots remain vacant pending a settlement of the Cyprus issue.
