Cyprus had a population of 982,966 as of 1 January 2025. Eurostat published these figures in its annual EU demographic review. Over the year, the island’s population increased by more than 16,000 people.

Overall, the European Union’s population in 2025 stood at 451 million people — about one million more than a year earlier. At the same time, Cyprus remains one of the least populated EU countries, accounting for around 0.2% of the bloc’s total population.

According to Eurostat, over the past 20 years Cyprus’s population has grown by roughly 34%, one of the highest rates of relative growth among EU countries. At the same time, the island’s median age is 41, below the European average of 44.9 years.

The share of children and teenagers under 15 in Cyprus reaches 15.2%, while the EU average is 14%. At the same time, European countries continue to face population ageing: the share of people over 65 in the EU has risen to 22%.

Migration plays a significant role in demographic changes. In 2024, 40,471 migrants arrived in Cyprus, while 26,883 people left the country. At the same time, the republic is among the few EU states with positive natural population growth — 3.1%. A higher figure was recorded only in Ireland, while Luxembourg posted a similar one.

According to Eurostat estimates, deaths have outnumbered births across the EU as a whole since 2012, but Cyprus has so far maintained positive demographic dynamics.
