The Cyprus National Guard Celebrates Its 60th Anniversary
The Cyprus National Guard celebrated its 60th anniversary on Tuesday since its establishment. On June 4, 1964, the Council of Ministers adopted a resolution to create the armed forces under the name "Cyprus National Guard." Three days earlier, the corresponding law was passed by the country's parliament.
"The armed forces, consisting of several thousand personnel with minimal armament and equipment, have evolved over 60 years into a modern and powerful deterrent force, possessing high operational readiness and combat power," said a statement from the Greek Armed Forces on the occasion of the anniversary.
The statement also noted that the national guard is now a potent instrument for realizing the political and military aspirations of the Republic of Cyprus.
