New UN initiative on Cyprus launched amid tensions in the buffer zone
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides stated that the new initiative by the UN Secretary-General for the settlement of the Cyprus issue has already been launched and is in the implementation phase. According to him, the process began in early March following a series of high-level contacts.
Speaking to journalists, the President also expressed concern over the increasing violations in the buffer zone. He noted that such actions serve a dual purpose: to question the status of the zone and simultaneously complicate the advancement of the new UN diplomatic initiative.
"We are in constant contact with the United Nations. However, we are not satisfied with mere verbal reactions — we expect concrete steps to restore the situation," Christodoulides emphasized.
According to him, the government is acting on two levels simultaneously — through the UN and the European Union. The primary responsibility for what is happening, as the President noted, lies with Turkey, and international efforts are focused in this direction.
Christodoulides also pointed out that the violations are linked to attempts to challenge existing international agreements, including UN resolutions, as well as to promote alternative interaction formats that are not recognized by the international community.
The President emphasized that such steps create additional obstacles for the diplomatic process, which has only just begun to take shape. Nevertheless, the Cypriot authorities hope that the new UN initiative will provide momentum to the negotiations and contribute to the search for a sustainable solution.
Further development of the situation is expected to depend on both the reaction of international organizations and the behavior of the parties in the region.
