Severe Weather That Hit Greek Islands Now Moving Toward Cyprus
The storm that has battered the Aegean Islands since the day before yesterday is expected to reach Cyprus tomorrow. Fortunately, meteorologists predict that by the time it arrives, the weather system will have significantly weakened.
Meteorologist Andreas Hatzigeorgiou told Philenews that the low-pressure system affecting Greece's islands is moving eastward and will reach Cyprus on Wednesday. However, experts believe it won’t cause the same level of destruction seen in the Greek islands.
Cloudy skies, scattered showers, and isolated thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon, particularly in the mountains and the eastern part of the island. Temperatures will be slightly below the seasonal average.
The low-pressure system is expected to lose strength within 24 hours as it continues moving eastward, taking with it the dust that has lingered in the atmosphere since last week.
"It seems our region is experiencing unstable weather conditions, which means rain is likely to continue in the coming days," Hatzigeorgiou said.
On Monday, March 31, a powerful storm struck the Greek islands of Paros and Mykonos, forcing authorities to shut down schools and ban all forms of transportation. In the towns of Parikia and Naousa, heavy rainfall triggered flash floods.
The Civil Protection Service sent emergency alerts to residents’ mobile phones, advising them to stay indoors until the storm passed.
