Price overview: vegetables are getting more expensive, animal products are becoming cheaper
In August 2025, the Cyprus Consumer Price Observatory recorded a significant increase in fresh vegetables and greens — up 49.3% compared to July. However, compared to August last year, these products actually became cheaper by 30.7%. The data was provided by the Consumer Protection Service of the Ministry of Energy, Commerce, and Industry.
The largest monthly price decrease was observed in fresh fish and shellfish — down 13.4%. Prices for frozen shellfish and crustaceans also fell — by 13.0%. Nevertheless, on a yearly comparison, the cost of these products increased by 6.0% and 4.5%, respectively.
Of the 45 basic product categories monitored, 21 showed a price increase compared to July, 21 showed a decrease, and prices for three categories (Cyprus coffee, bread, and infant milk) remained unchanged.
Among the goods that became more expensive in August were: liquefied gas in cylinders (+4.9%), fresh meat (+3.8%), vegetable oils (+2.7%), laundry powders (+2.4%), instant coffee (+2.3%), toilet paper (+2.2%), flour (+2.0%), fabric softeners (+1.7%), sanitary pads (+1.1%).
Against the general trend, prices fell for yogurts (–1.5%), bulgur (–1.5%), butter (–1.4%), baby diapers (–1.2%), and also for buns and bagels (–1.1%).
The report also points to slowing inflation: between May and August, Cyprus has been experiencing deflation. The consumer price index decreased by 0.2% in May, 0.4% in June, and 0.9% in July and August.
In yearly comparison, the most notable decreases were in: electricity (–11.6%), petroleum products (–7.3%), and food and non-alcoholic beverages overall (–3.0%). Agricultural product prices fell by 5.3% over the year, although there was a 4.4% increase compared to July of this year.
The Consumer Protection Service emphasizes that the Price Observatory is purely informational and does not constitute a recommendation to purchase specific goods or choose particular stores. It is also noted that there may be quality differences within product categories, which are not reflected in the general comparison. Consumers are advised to analyze the market and compare offers before making purchases.
