Foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks expand: number of infected farms in Cyprus reaches 110
New cases of foot-and-mouth disease in animals have been recorded in Cyprus. As reported by the Veterinary Services, two new outbreaks were identified in sheep and goat farms in the Athienou area. The total number of infected enterprises has risen to 110.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have not yet made a separate decision regarding rare animal breeds, including red cows and thick-wooled sheep. A corresponding conclusion is expected to be announced in the coming days.
In parallel, vaccination is being actively carried out. According to the department, the second stage of cattle immunization has already covered 81% of the livestock. Among sheep and goats, the figure stands at 64%.
On pig farms in restricted zones, all holdings have received at least the first dose of the vaccine. In the Larnaca district, four enterprises have already undergone re-vaccination.
The Veterinary Services emphasize that vaccination remains a key tool for curbing the spread of the disease. Authorities urge farmers to strictly observe sanitary measures and promptly report any suspicious symptoms in animals.
The situation remains under control; however, the increase in the number of outbreaks indicates the need for further urgent measures to protect the agricultural sector.
