Pediatricians warn of risks: Cyprus strengthens focus on vaccination as social responsibility
In Cyprus, pediatricians and the Ministry of Health are calling for increased prevention of infectious diseases, emphasizing the key role of vaccination in protecting public health. As part of Vaccination Week, a press conference was held where current data on the population's immunization level was presented.
Minister of Health Neofytos Charalambidis stated that vaccination is not only a medical measure but also an "act of social responsibility." According to him, this week also serves as an opportunity for dialogue with citizens and raising awareness about disease prevention.
According to the presented data, the vaccination rate in Cyprus remains high. Specifically, measles vaccination coverage reached 97% in 2024, Hepatitis A — 90.65%, chickenpox — 90.48%, and pneumococcal vaccination in 2025 stood at 78.56%. Despite good indicators, experts emphasize the need for constant monitoring and informational work with the population.
Specialists warn that migration flows and the arrival of people from countries with low vaccination levels can create risks for unvaccinated children and vulnerable population groups. In this regard, special attention is paid to ensuring equal and easy access to vaccination for all residents of the island.
Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Health Elizabeth Constantinou called vaccines the "cornerstone of the healthcare system." She emphasized that vaccination protects not only individuals but society as a whole, including those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons.
Representatives of the Cyprus Pediatric Society also supported the initiative, urging parents not to neglect routine immunization of children and to consult doctors in a timely manner.
Authorities note that maintaining a high vaccination rate remains one of the key factors in preventing infectious disease outbreaks and protecting public health in Cyprus.
