Sharp statements from the North: Criticism of Cyprus-Israel cooperation sharpens rhetoric
Turkish Cypriot representative Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu has harshly criticized the cooperation between the Republic of Cyprus and Israel, calling it a "dirty alliance against the Turks." In an interview with Turkish media, he stated that such actions could allegedly have serious consequences in the near future.
According to him, Nicosia's activity in the Eastern Mediterranean could have led to an escalation of tension, but, as he claims, this was avoided thanks to Turkey's actions. Ertuğruloğlu also emphasized that the strengthening of Ankara's military presence on the island, including the deployment of F-16 fighters and air defense systems, "strengthened the sense of security" for the Turkish Cypriot side.
The politician reiterated that a settlement of the Cyprus issue is only possible on the basis of "equal status" for both sides. He accused the Greek Cypriot side of ignoring this position and "living in a different reality," and also criticized the reaction to Turkey's military presence.
In addition, Ertuğruloğlu pointed to the role of British bases on the island, stating that their use by Western countries could turn Cyprus into a potential target during periods of international crisis.
The statements were made against the backdrop of persistent tension in the Eastern Mediterranean region and ongoing disagreements over the Cyprus settlement.
