Three to Face Trial for Dismembering Kangaroo in Cyprus
Details have emerged about the disturbing case of a kangaroo that was killed and dismembered in a parking lot outside an apartment complex in Deryneia, Cyprus. Three individuals — including employees of an animal facility — are set to stand trial in connection with the incident.
The suspects include:
-
A 36-year-old man from Cameroon, who was caught at the scene,
-
The wife of the animal facility’s owner,
-
An employee of the same facility.
They are facing charges under Cyprus’s animal welfare legislation.
The incident took place in broad daylight on May 6. Police in Famagusta arrested the man as he was dismembering the kangaroo. A second suspect fled the scene and remains wanted by authorities.
Upon his arrest, it was discovered that the man had been living illegally in Cyprus since 2022. During questioning, he claimed that the dead kangaroo had been given to him by a third party in Paralimni. Parts of the carcass were seized by investigators.
A post-mortem examination confirmed that the animal had been slaughtered.
Authorities are also searching for the driver of a double-cab van believed to have helped transport the kangaroo from the farm in Paralimni. The investigation is ongoing.
