A decomposed body was found in the sea near Famagusta
Cyprus police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a decomposed body in the Sotira area in the suburb of Famagusta. Presumably, the body belongs to a woman.
According to the police press service, the body was discovered on Monday around two o'clock in the afternoon. A local resident, who went fishing in the Agia Thekla area, reported the gruesome find to the police.
Police officers who arrived at the scene of the body's discovery cordoned off the area. Upon inspection, it was found that the body was in an advanced state of decomposition, with the lower part of the body missing.
The coast guard continues to search the coastal area for possible evidence or missing body parts.
The remains were collected and transferred to the morgue of the general hospital in Nicosia. The police believe that the body belongs to a woman. However, the identity and exact cause of death will be determined after a scheduled autopsy and forensic examination.
It is expected that the legally required autopsy will be conducted on Tuesday afternoon in the presence of forensic experts and an anthropologist to determine the gender, age, and time the body spent in the water.
