Volunteers urge calm over reports of missing cats in Cyprus
The animal welfare volunteer coalition "Shelterless Animal Protection" appealed to the public on February 20, 2026, to remain calm regarding reports of disappearing cats in Cyprus.
In a statement, the organization noted that the incidents require "seriousness, restraint, and institutional responsibility" and urged against making unsubstantiated accusations toward registered charitable organizations operating within the law.
The appeal follows complaints about the alleged removal of neutered cats from a supermarket parking lot in Latsia. Volunteers emphasized that the legal transfer of animals and their transportation abroad, when procedures are followed, is a form of rescue and an improvement of the animals' living conditions.
The statement also indicated that the police are conducting an investigation and have not confirmed the existence of organized networks for animal removal. Volunteers called on citizens to refrain from conflicts and to gather information politely, without hindering sterilization and rescue efforts.
Those wishing to report a concerning incident are asked to send details — name, location, date, time, and contact information — to the email address [email protected]. The collected information will be forwarded to the competent authorities for further investigation.
