The malfunction at the Mavrokolimbos Dam in Paphos has been repaired
The malfunction, recorded on January 19, 2025, at the Mavrokolimbos Dam in the Paphos area of Cyprus, has been resolved, stated the Chairman of EOA Paphos, Charalambos Pittokopitis, and the District Engineer of the Water Development Department, Haris Kasiulis.
According to Pittokopitis, following notification from the Water Development Department, repair works were carried out during the first two weeks of September, and from September 15, the dam is considered operational and connected to the irrigation network of the Paphos government water system. More flexible operational modes have been introduced to prevent recurrence of problems.
The Mavrokolimbos Dam is ready to receive the first volumes of winter precipitation; its capacity is 1.4 million cubic meters. Water from the reservoir is used to irrigate the western lowland area of Paphos, in particular the communities of Chloraka, Kissonerga, and Peyia. Additionally, it accumulates water volumes after tertiary treatment at the Paphos biological wastewater treatment plant.
Pittokopitis reported that permanent solutions for the water supply of the Poli Chrysochous area are being considered, including the construction of a desalination plant or the use of the treatment facility at the Evretou reservoir. Currently, all settlements of the Poli Chrysochous municipality are supplied exclusively from artesian wells.
