Doctors warn: a wave of seasonal viral infections is rising in Cyprus
Cypriot doctors report a noticeable surge in seasonal viral infections, which in recent weeks has been affecting an increasing number of people. A particularly high number of cases is being recorded in schools and workplaces, where people spend long periods indoors.
According to general practitioners, several viruses are currently circulating at the same time — from the common cold to Covid-19 and influenza A. While common colds more often present with mild symptoms such as a sore throat, slight fever and runny nose, influenza and coronavirus usually cause a more severe clinical picture: high fever, pronounced weakness, muscle aches and a feeling of complete exhaustion.
Doctors emphasize that risk groups — young children, the elderly and patients with chronic illnesses — should be especially cautious. They are advised not to delay seeking medical attention if their condition worsens and to pay close attention to preventive measures.
The increase in cases is linked to the onset of winter, closer contact between people in enclosed spaces and frequent pre-holiday gatherings. Ahead of the Christmas season, doctors remind the public of basic protective measures: frequent handwashing, wearing a mask when experiencing symptoms, ventilating rooms and, if possible, self-isolating when feeling unwell.
According to specialists, the peak circulation of influenza viruses is expected not only now but also in the coming months — January and February. Citizens are urged to take care of their own health and the health of others in advance to avoid complications and overloading the healthcare system.
