Number of underground tremors in Turkey exceeds 1,200

High seismic activity continues in western Turkey following the 6.1-magnitude earthquake that occurred on August 10, 2025. According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of Turkey (AFAD), as of the morning of August 13 at 09:30, a total of 1,235 earthquakes have been recorded in the region, including the main event and aftershocks.
The powerful first tremor occurred on August 10 at 19:53 local time and was felt not only in Balıkesir but also in neighboring provinces, as well as in parts of the Aegean and Marmara regions. Since then, numerous aftershocks have been recorded, 19 of which had a magnitude of 4.0 or higher. Seismologists note that some aftershocks were accompanied by a noticeable rumble and lasted several seconds, causing concern among local residents.
The authorities of Balıkesir and AFAD urge the population to remain vigilant, avoid damaged buildings, and strictly follow the recommendations of rescue services. Additional rescue teams, firefighting units, and medical crews have been sent to the areas most affected by the earthquakes. Temporary shelters have been set up in open spaces to ensure people’s safety in case of further strong tremors.
Experts remind that aftershocks can continue for weeks or even months, and their strength can be significant. Residents of the region are advised to keep emergency kits with water, food, flashlights, and communication devices.
According to preliminary data, there have been no serious casualties from the earthquake, but some buildings have been damaged, and cracks have been reported in houses and outbuildings in certain villages. Damage assessment work is ongoing.
