UN Chief Accuses Both Communities in Cyprus of Violations in Buffer Zone

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has released a report on the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

In his report, the UN Chief highlights a record number of violations in the “dead zone” by both communities on the island. António Guterres has repeatedly stressed the importance of preventing unilateral actions that could escalate tensions, undermine trust between the parties, and hinder their return to negotiations. The UN Chief called on the parties to engage in dialogue to resolve their differences.

Additionally, the UN Secretary-General noted that actions inside and outside the buffer zone have contributed to growing distrust and do not support the current situation. He pointed out the increasing militarization from both sides, which contradicts statements by leaders claiming they seek progress on the Cyprus issue.

António Guterres emphasized the significance of the work done by bilateral technical committees and the positive impact of confidence-building measures.

“Only sincere progress towards consensus on the starting point of negotiations leading to a mutually acceptable settlement will contribute to achieving a sustainable solution and reassure both Cypriots and the international community that a peaceful and shared future on the island is indeed possible,” said the UN Chief.

It is noteworthy that earlier, President of the TRNC Ersin Tatar met with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus and the Head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, Colin Stewart.

The Head of UNFICYP expressed concern over “the militarization of the buffer zone, which both sides are advancing at alarming rates.”
