Who gives bribes in the TRNC?
According to the 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index concerning the TRNC, an increase in corruption is noted within the Turkish Cypriot community. 73% of businesspeople called it a "very serious problem," and every third reported that they had to give a bribe to receive a service in the past year.
In the report prepared by academics Ömer Gökçekuş and Sertaç Sonan and recently published by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES), a steady rise in corruption levels in the north has been recorded, especially over the last five years. The study uses the methodology of the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), published annually by Transparency International (TI), which does not cover TRNC territories and is based on the opinions of businesspeople and experts. The CPI is the most widely used global corruption index. It ranks 182 countries and territories worldwide.
