Lefke: environmental society demanded intervention due to septic tank discharge into Gemikonagi stream
The Lefke Environmental Society reported that septic tank discharge has been observed in the Gemikonagi stream in Lefke, Northern Cyprus, for about a month and called on the competent authorities for immediate intervention. The message was published on December 26, 2025.
In the organization's statement, it was noted that the discharge was recorded in the riverbed behind the Tyufekci buildings. According to the society, the situation causes an unpleasant odor, creates hygiene problems, and poses a health risk to local residents.
The organization stated that at the beginning of December 2025, it sent written notifications to the Department of Environmental Protection and the Lefke Municipality, but no response from official authorities was received. The statement notes that the lack of response delays problem resolution and increases risks for the population.
The Lefke Environmental Society demanded that the Department of Environmental Protection and the Lefke Municipality carry out the necessary inspections, identify the source of pollution, take measures to eliminate it, and inform residents about the progress of the work. The document also contains a call to protect Lefke's natural appearance and ensure citizens' right to a safe environment.
