Island to be covered by North African dust: warning for the entire week
Cyprus is expecting a prolonged period of dusty weather. According to the Meteorological Department, from Monday until midnight on Sunday, May 17, elevated concentrations of dust carried by air masses from North Africa will be observed in the atmosphere.
Experts warn that the deterioration in air quality may be felt across almost the entire island. On certain days, the concentration of fine particles in the air may reach elevated levels, which is particularly dangerous for people with respiratory diseases, allergy sufferers, elderly citizens, and young children.
Authorities recommend that residents limit prolonged stays outdoors as much as possible, avoid intense physical exercise outside, and monitor official air quality forecasts. People sensitive to dust are advised to take special precautions.
Meteorologists note that such dust events are not uncommon for the region during the spring period; however, this current episode may turn out to be longer than usual. Weather conditions are expected to begin improving after May 17.
