TRNC tops food inflation ranking: opposition demands scientific approach to economy
MP Devrim Barçın from the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) published data on annual food inflation for March 2026, according to which the TRNC ranked first among the countries listed. According to the published statistics, the food inflation rate was 40.41%, rising to 40.78% in April.
Barçın noted that Northern Cyprus's figures significantly exceed the inflation rates in other regional countries and OECD nations. For comparison, food inflation in Turkey was 32.36%, in the Republic of Cyprus — 6.2%, while the average for OECD countries stands at 3.6%.
In the published list, Mexico, Colombia, the Republic of Cyprus, and Greece follow the TRNC and Turkey. Meanwhile, negative food inflation was recorded in several European countries, including Belgium and Hungary.
According to the deputy, the current economic situation requires a shift away from "cliché statements" and a move towards policies based on data and scientific approaches. He emphasized that the discussion of economic problems should be built on objective statistics and analysis, rather than political slogans.
Rising food prices remain one of the primary concerns for Northern Cyprus residents. Economists warn that high inflation continues to erode the population's purchasing power and increase pressure on family budgets.
