The US Ambassador to Cyprus commented on the situation in the Middle East and the Cyprus issue
US Ambassador in Nicosia, Julie Fisher, expressed confidence that Cyprus can play a significant role in efforts to stabilize the situation in the Middle East.
The American diplomat made these remarks at the Delphi Economic Forum in Athens. Julie Fisher emphasized that she observes Cyprus playing an “active role” in the region “as a member state of the European Union, standing with one foot in the Middle East.”
In the diplomat's opinion, such a significant role of the island emerged due to the “relationships that Cyprus has developed over the decades.”
Additionally, Julie Fisher highly praised the “Amalthea” plan, a Cypriot humanitarian aid corridor to the Gaza Strip, adding that its implementation was “not a surprise” to her or the US government.
The US Ambassador commended Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and his government, as well as those who “share the vision of Cyprus as a place contributing to problem-solving.”
The diplomat emphasized that Cyprus and the United States of America are working “hand in hand” on planning the potential evacuation of “tens of thousands of people” from Lebanon in case the conflict spreads to the country.
Furthermore, Julie Fisher touched upon the Cyprus issue, emphasizing the importance of the UN envoy Maria Angela Holguín Cuellar and her efforts to find a “point of convergence” between the two sides in Cyprus.
“I believe that work is best done quietly, in quiet conversations,” added the US Ambassador in Cyprus.
