Tensions rise at Famagusta Port: customs officers threaten protests

At the largest seaport in the TRNC — Famagusta — problems with work organization and safety continue to intensify. The customs workers' union has warned of possible protest actions, saying the situation at the port is becoming critical due to years of a lack of systemic solutions.

According to the union, over the past weekend customs staff and port workers were forced to clean the area, organize parking, and place containers on their own, carrying out functions that should be handled by the Ports Administration and the Ministry of Transport.

The statement emphasizes that the chaos at the port is already directly threatening the safety of workers and visitors. Union representatives recalled previous accidents and road traffic incidents on the port grounds, calling them the result of years of a lack of investment and proper oversight.

The customs officers said they intend to keep pressing the authorities until concrete measures are taken to modernize the infrastructure and organize the port's operations. A strike has not been ruled out if employees' demands remain unanswered.

Famagusta Port is considered one of the TRNC's key logistics hubs, so any possible disruption to its operations could affect cargo transport, imports of goods, and business activity. The union urged the authorities to intervene urgently to avoid further deterioration of the situation and ensure safe working conditions.
