Northern Cyprus switches to electronic checks: Clearing will become faster and safer
The Banks Association of Northern Cyprus has announced the launch of the Electronic Check Clearing System (ECTS), marking a significant step in the digitalization of the financial sector. The innovation became possible after amendments to the bills of exchange legislation and comprehensive technical preparation. The main goal of the system is to eliminate the physical movement of checks between banks and ensure their processing in electronic format.
With the implementation of ECTS, the traditional procedure for processing paper checks is effectively becoming a thing of the past. Banks will be able to perform clearing, reconciliation, and settlements entirely in a digital environment, allowing interbank transactions to be completed within one business day. This significantly accelerates financial processes and increases the overall efficiency of the country's payment system.
The project was implemented in cooperation with the Central Bank and aims to modernize the payment infrastructure. The electronic system eliminates risks associated with the physical transportation of checks, such as loss or theft, as all data and images are transmitted via secure channels. Furthermore, faster payment processing will allow customers to plan their financial flows more accurately.
Experts believe that the implementation of ECTS will be a key element in the digital transformation of the banking sector. The transition to electronic tools not only enhances security but also aligns with international trends in financial technology development. In the long term, this may contribute to increased trust in the banking system and improved quality of customer service.
