Media: Cyprus considers purchasing tanks from Israel and Greece
The Republic of Cyprus is discussing a possible strengthening of its armored fleet amid reports of negotiations with foreign partners. According to Greek-Cypriot media, deliveries of both Greek and Israeli tanks are being considered.
Earlier, information appeared regarding the possible transfer of Leopard 1A5 tanks from Greece, although there is no official confirmation of these reports yet.
At the same time, negotiations with Israel regarding the purchase of Merkava Mk3 tanks have been reported. According to sources, the potential acquisition is being considered in the context of increasing defense capabilities, including counteracting modern threats such as unmanned aerial vehicles.
Greek media note that Israeli tanks possess more modern characteristics and can provide a higher level of protection and combat effectiveness.
Official authorities in Cyprus and Greece have not yet commented on these reports. Nevertheless, the discussions reflect a general trend toward strengthening the region's defense potential amid ongoing instability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
