Disputes in parliament: economy, elections, and "digital crisis" become main topics
Sharp debates have unfolded in the TRNC parliament, covering economic policy, agriculture, digitalization, and possible early elections. Representatives of the opposition and the government exchanged harsh criticism, highlighting deep disagreements on key issues.
CTP MP Ongun Talat stated that the country is sinking into debt dependency while the budget deficit continues to grow. According to him, the government is covering old obligations with new loans without offering sustainable solutions. He also called for early elections as early as June, calling the potential postponement of the vote to October "disrespect to citizens."
Criticism was also leveled at digital policy. The opposition spoke of a "collapse" in this field, including pressure on the media and risks associated with cybercrime.
In response, Minister of Interior Dursun Oğuz emphasized that the government is taking systemic steps, including a 10% spending cut in several departments. He noted that key areas — healthcare and education — will not be affected, and the measures are aimed at financial stabilization.
The discussion also touched on agriculture. MP Fide Kürşat pointed to the rising cost of living and the plight of producers, accusing the authorities of ineffective management. In response, Minister of Agriculture Hüseyin Çavuş noted a growth in production and called part of the criticism unfounded.
Special attention was paid to digital risks. MP Doğuş Derya warned about the growing influence of radical online communities and manipulation through algorithms, calling it "digital fascism." Minister of Education Nazım Çavuşoğlu acknowledged the problem and reported on measures to protect youth, including safe internet programs in schools.
Despite the disagreements, the debate participants agreed on one thing: the country needs comprehensive solutions. However, for now, parliament remains an arena for political confrontation rather than consensus.
