Three traffic accidents overnight in the TRNC: drivers without licenses and under the influence arrested
Over the course of one night, three road traffic accidents occurred in the districts of Nicosia and Famagusta, in which, fortunately, no one was seriously injured. However, all three incidents ended with the arrest of the drivers — among them were violators without driving licenses and motorists under the influence of alcohol.
The first accident was recorded on May 22 at around 10:30 p.m. on the Nicosia–Guzelyurt highway. A 38-year-old driver, who was driving under the influence of alcohol (189 mg), collided with the car in front, which was slowing down near a police checkpoint. Despite the absence of casualties, the man was detained for dangerous driving and driving under the influence.
The second incident occurred at around 11:30 p.m. in Nicosia. A 22-year-old driver lost control and crashed into an electric pole. Police established that he did not have a driver’s license or insurance. No one was injured, but the offender was arrested.
The third accident took place early in the morning of May 23 in the Bogaz area on the Famagusta–Karpas highway. A 23-year-old woman, while under the influence of alcohol (144 mg), lost control of the vehicle and first collided with metal barriers, after which the car left the road and crashed into an embankment. The woman sustained minor injuries and was discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment, but she was also detained.
Cyprus police continue to investigate all three incidents. The authorities again reminded the public of the inadmissibility of driving under the influence and without the relevant documents, stressing that such violations pose a serious threat to road safety.
