Man detained at Ercan Airport while attempting to export embryos

In the TRNC, police are investigating a possible violation of the legislation on the transplantation of human cells, tissues and organs. The suspect, identified by the initials YG, was detained at Ercan Airport while attempting to take embryos out of the country without the required permission.
According to the court, the incident took place in the morning of 19 May at the Kale 8 checkpoint. During the inspection, officers found a container on the man containing four embryos in separate tubes.
According to the police, the embryos had been obtained at an in vitro fertilization center in Nicosia. As part of the investigation, it was established that no official permission had been issued for their export from the TRNC — only an application had been submitted to the relevant authorities.
The embryos were seized as material evidence, and the suspect himself was arrested. The investigation is also reviewing CCTV footage and collecting additional testimony.
Police officer Afet Olgan told the court that the detainee had already given voluntary testimony in the case. Investigators requested additional time to examine the circumstances of the incident and verify all documents related to the transport of the biological material.
Judge Şevket Gazi granted the police request and ordered that the suspect remain in custody for two days.
The case has drawn significant public attention, as issues related to the transport of embryos and the operation of IVF centers are governed by strict international and local regulations.
