Man arrested in Kyrenia for attempting to illegally export a Burmese python

One of the largest snake species in the world — the Burmese python — was found at the port of Kyrenia during an attempt to illegally export it from Northern Cyprus. This was reported by local “customs services”.
According to authorities, the arrested man admitted that he illegally imported the python about a year ago to keep it as an exotic pet — which is completely prohibited in Northern Cyprus.
The python is about one year old, but its length already reaches 2.30 m and its weight 4 kg. Adult specimens of the species can reach 5 meters and 80 kg. The Burmese python is considered one of the largest and fastest-growing snake species.
Burmese pythons have gained notoriety in the USA — in Florida, they destroy local wildlife and are considered one of the most dangerous invasive species.
Since import and possession of this species are prohibited, the snake was confiscated. For safe transportation and quarantine, Taşkent Doğa Parkı was involved, where the python was transferred for examination and further care.
