Nine Out of Ten Children in Cyprus Regularly Attended Kindergarten Last Year
According to Eurostat, the European Statistical Agency, nine out of ten children in Cyprus attended kindergarten in 2023.
The data shows that 86.6% of children aged between three years and the minimum compulsory school age were enrolled in formal childcare or education for at least 25 hours per week. This figure is significantly higher than the EU average of 68%.
In contrast, only 0.9% of children in Cyprus received formal childcare or education for one to two hours per week, compared to the EU average of 21.1%.
However, there is a concerning trend: 32.5% of children in Cyprus at risk of poverty or social exclusion did not attend any kindergarten or school. This percentage is markedly higher than the EU average of 16.8%. Among children not at risk of poverty, the figures were 8% in Cyprus and 9% in the EU.
It is important to note that the data concerning children at risk of poverty or social exclusion in Cyprus is considered less reliable.
