An investigation into a violent clash that occurred during the day on Grigori Afxentiou Avenue in Larnaca has led police to a large criminal network engaged in extorting shop and nightclub owners.

According to investigators, the conflict erupted after a Greek Cypriot entrepreneur refused to pay “protection” money to an organized group. Two weeks earlier, he had received a call demanding a one-time payment of €7,000, followed by €1,000 per month. After his refusal, threats began.

On Saturday afternoon, a man of Arab origin came to the businessman’s shop, where an argument broke out. Later, near a nearby fast-food outlet, the dispute escalated into knife threats. Minutes later, several cars arrived at high speed, from which about 20 people emerged and began beating the shop owner.

The entrepreneur, along with his relative and two friends, resisted using axes, iron rods, and batons. During the mass fight, members of the gang fired two shots from a firearm in a crowded area. Fortunately, no one was hit by the bullets.

The investigation established that the suspect group had been actively expanding its influence in Larnaca. A week before the incident, a 48-year-old Cypriot, considered the leader of the gang and currently under eight-day detention, together with 15 accomplices, attempted to forcibly take control of security at a nightclub — unsuccessfully. The very next day, they managed to impose a “deal” on another establishment.

According to police, the scheme worked as follows: owners were forced to hire security guards at €80 per person, of which €30 went to the criminals, while the guards themselves received only €50. In addition, the same 48-year-old is suspected of brutally beating an EU citizen in Pyla the day before the Larnaca events — also as part of extortion.

Despite an extensive criminal record and recent release on bail in other serious cases, the suspect continued to lead the gang’s activities.

Police are searching for three foreigners of Arab origin aged 35, 26, and 20, considered key members of the gang. During a raid on one apartment, three Palestinians were detained — eight 9 mm military-grade cartridges were found on them. Two remain in custody, while the third was released due to lack of connection to the case.

At the scene of the fight, investigators seized a car and two spent shell casings, believed to be from a pistol. The investigation is ongoing, and police are identifying all participants in the attack.
