The European Commission has reaffirmed its full support for the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project, which is intended to connect the power grids of Cyprus and Greece and end the island's energy isolation.

This was announced by the European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen, following meetings in Nicosia with the energy ministers of Cyprus and Greece, representatives of the European Investment Bank, and project organizers.

According to the Commissioner, the European Commission views the GSI as a strategically important project not only for Cyprus but for the entire Eastern Mediterranean. He emphasized that connecting the island to the European energy grid will increase the stability of power supply, reduce electricity costs, and accelerate the development of renewable energy sources.

Jørgensen noted that in the context of the new energy crisis and Europe's dependence on imported fossil fuels, the project takes on special significance for the region's energy security.

The European Commission has already granted the project the status of a Project of Common Interest (PCI) and has allocated approximately 658 million euros through the "Connecting Europe Facility." This is one of the largest grants ever awarded under this mechanism.

Furthermore, the Great Sea Interconnector was included in the list of eight priority energy corridors of the European Union, necessary to complete the formation of the EU Energy Union.

Following the talks in Nicosia, the parties agreed to intensify work on the project's implementation. The European Commission expects the energy bridge to become a key element of Cyprus's integration into the pan-European energy market.
