Greece to maintain permanent F-16 fighter jet presence in Cyprus

The Ministry of National Defence of Greece has decided to continue the permanent presence of F-16 fighter jets in Cyprus. According to Greek state radio and television, the mission will be carried out on a rotational basis with regular rotation of pilots and aircraft.
The primary task of the Greek Air Force is stated to be providing air defense for Cyprus amid ongoing tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and the consequences of the Middle East crisis.
It is noted that Greece was among the first to activate its military presence in the region during the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. At that time, modern frigates 'Kimon' and 'Psara' were promptly deployed to Cypriot waters. In addition, the frigate 'Elli' continues to remain on permanent high alert in the region.
Defense sources also explained that the movement of air defense systems within Greek territory is linked solely to operational tasks and does not indicate any further escalation.
Specifically, it is reported that a pair of Mirage fighter jets from the Tanagra air base will be redeployed to the base in Karpathos, which previously housed Patriot systems. They will perform quick-reaction alert missions in the Aegean Sea airspace.
Athens' decision is viewed as part of a broader strategy to strengthen defense cooperation between Greece and Cyprus amid an unstable regional situation.
