Christodoulides: Cyprus and the region will be key to Europe's new energy map

President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides has called for accelerated changes in the energy sector, emphasizing the strategic role of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean in ensuring Europe's energy security.
The statement was made during the President's meeting with Chevron's head of emerging markets. The President noted that energy was one of the key topics at the informal European Council summit held in Cyprus and remains a priority for the entire European Union today.
Christodoulides stressed that the region, including Cyprus and Egypt, is capable of becoming an important hub for developing alternative energy supply routes to Europe. According to him, this is especially relevant given global instability and the EU's drive to diversify energy sources.
The President also announced that internal procedures are expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, after which the agreement with Chevron will be submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers for consideration.
Separately, he noted that energy cooperation issues were also discussed with the President of Egypt on the sidelines of the informal European Council. This, he said, confirms the growing importance of regional cooperation for implementing specific energy projects and integrating the Eastern Mediterranean into Europe's energy strategy.
Christodoulides emphasized that such initiatives will strengthen not only the EU's energy security but also the strategic role of Cyprus as a link between producers and European markets.
