Cyprus under rain: April significantly wetter, reservoirs filling up rapidly

An abnormally high level of precipitation has been recorded in Cyprus: as of Wednesday morning, April 29, the amount of rainfall in April reached 183% of the seasonal norm, with a monthly average of 54.6 mm.
According to the Department of Meteorology, almost all regions of the island received significantly more rainfall than usual. In several areas, the figure more than doubled the norm: Athienou — 316%, Frenaros — 262%, Xylotymbou — 255%, Prodromos — 253%, Platania — 222%, Lythrodontas — 219%, and Paphos Airport — 200%.
The maximum monthly rainfall was recorded in Prodromos at 135.4 mm. The only exception was the Athalassa station in Nicosia, where rainfall was 94% of the norm, considered close to the average.
Since the beginning of the current hydrological year (from October 1, 2025), the total rainfall level on the island has reached 112% of the norm. The wettest region during this period was Stavros tis Psokas, which recorded 1019.4 mm of rain.
Impact on Reservoirs
Abundant rainfall has significantly improved the water resource situation. According to preliminary estimates by water authorities, Cyprus's reservoir levels have risen noticeably, reaching an average of about 70–75% of total capacity. In some large reservoirs, levels are near seasonal maximums, significantly reducing the risk of water shortages during the summer period.
Experts note that continued wet weather through the spring months could further strengthen the island's water balance and bolster reserves before the traditionally dry summer.
