The authorities of the Republic of Cyprus are placing the relevant services on heightened alert ahead of the start of the fire season. Particular attention is being paid to cooperation with the United Nations for a rapid response to possible fires in the buffer zone.

According to the Forestry Department, two important meetings were held with UN representatives as part of the preparations. The main topics of discussion were the existing fire response procedures, as well as improving coordination among all involved bodies in the event of emergencies in sensitive areas of the buffer zone.

In parallel, specialists carried out on-site inspections and checks of access points to the buffer zone. The purpose of the visits was to assess the operational readiness of the services and their ability to respond quickly in the event of fires.

Employees of the Forestry Department and the Cyprus Fire Service took part in the meetings and inspections. The authorities stress that interagency cooperation and collaboration with international organizations are key elements in preventing large-scale wildfires during the summer period.

Against the backdrop of expected higher temperatures and dry conditions in the region, civil protection services are preparing to operate in an enhanced mode in order to minimize risks to the population and the environment.
