Cyprus Ranks Last in the EU for Female Representation in Parliament
Cyprus has the lowest percentage of female members in its parliament among all European Union countries. According to a report by the European statistical agency Eurostat, women make up just 14.3% of the Cypriot parliament.
Hungary comes in second-to-last with 14.6% female MPs. After Cyprus, Romania has the next lowest proportion of women in parliament at 19.5%.
The highest percentage of female MPs is found in the northern EU countries. Sweden leads with 45.6%, followed closely by Finland at 45.5% and Denmark at 44.7%.
Overall, the proportion of women in national parliaments across the EU rose to 33.4% in 2024, a 5.6% increase from 2014.
At the government level, the percentage of women has grown even further, with 35.1% of ministers being women, compared to 27.7% in 2014.
