Red alert: Foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Athienou intensifies livestock crisis
A red alert has been declared in the Athienou area following the identification of at least three new cases of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) on sheep and goat farms. Official statements from veterinary services are expected shortly, but the situation is already causing serious concern.
The municipality, together with livestock farmers, previously took extensive measures to contain the spread of the infection: seven disinfection points were organized in the region, and access roads to the livestock zone were blocked. The area is home to about 30 farms, housing around 15,000 cattle and approximately 20,000 sheep and goats.
The crisis began after the first identified case in February 2026 and has since worsened significantly. To date, at least 108 infected farms have been registered across the island, with the majority located in Larnaca and Nicosia.
Livestock losses remain extremely high. Nearly 39,000 sheep and goats, more than 2,000 cattle, and tens of thousands of pigs have been culled. The proportion of infected animals reaches 8.1% among small livestock, 2.8% among cattle, and nearly 8% in pig farming.
Despite active vaccination efforts, the situation is not yet fully under control. Vaccination has been completed in Famagusta and is nearly finished in Larnaca, while rates in Nicosia remain lower.
Experts warn that the further spread of the disease could cause serious damage to Cyprus's agriculture and economy if additional measures are not taken.
